Dr. Amy L. McGuire
Baylor College of Medicine
Dr. McGuire discusses the future of personal genomics and its ethical, legal, and social implications. The Human Genome Project took 13 years and $2.7 billion dollars to complete, making it possible to sequence an individual's entire genome within a few months for less than $1 million. Advances in technology have stimulated research, enabling scientists to better understand human genetic variation and its association with common and complex disorders, such as heart disease and diabetes. There is great hope that these research advances will ultimately lead to the practice of "personalized medicine." Dr. McGuire discusses the impact this will have on the practice of medicine and what challenges will have to be overcome for the promise of personalized genomics to become a reality.
